The St Mary of Carmen Society would like to thank Mayor Marc Laredo and the City of Newton for their decision to restore the green, white, and red lines on Adams Street.
For generations, the colors of the Italian flag painted along Adams Street have represented far more than paint on pavement. They are a symbol of the people, families, and traditions that make the Nonantum community so special. Those street lines are not just paint. They represent generations of families and the immigrant roots that helped build this neighborhood and the strong community that exists here today.
Nonantum has long been a gateway into Newton for immigrants and families looking to build a better life. For decades, people arriving from around the world have found opportunity, support, and a sense of belonging here. Neighbors look out for one another, families put down roots, and new residents quickly become part of the fabric of the village. That welcoming spirit is one of the things that makes Nonantum such a special place.
We appreciate the work of the Mayor’s office, the Department of Public Works, and city staff in finding a thoughtful solution that both meets safety standards and respects the traditions that mean so much to residents and families here in Nonantum.
As we prepare for another summer of community celebrations, especially the 91st Annual St Mary of Carmen Society Festival, July 15 to 19, we are grateful to see this meaningful tradition restored. Each year, the festival brings together neighbors, families, longtime residents, and visitors to celebrate the culture, history, and strong sense of community that defines Nonantum.
The green, white, and red on Adams Street will once again welcome everyone into Nonantum, serving as a proud symbol of our history, our heritage, and the community spirit that continues to bring the village together each summer.
