Public Statement on 90th Festival

As we approach our 90th annual celebration, the St. Mary of Carmen Society feels compelled to express our deep frustration with Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller regarding the removal of the Italian-colored centerline on Adams Street — a symbolic tribute to our heritage and roots in the Nonantum neighborhood. The decision to remove it, without meaningful dialogue or sensitivity to its cultural significance, has left us disappointed and disheartened.

Despite this setback, we now turn our attention to what truly matters: celebrating our culture, honoring our faith, and bringing our community together.

We invite everyone to join us at Pellegrini Park in Newton, from Wednesday, July 16th through Sunday, July 20th, for the 90th Annual St. Mary of Carmen Festival — a proud tradition that celebrates Italian-American heritage, family values, and neighborhood spirit.

Enjoy authentic Italian food, carnival rides for all ages, and vibrant nightly entertainment.

As part of our religious celebration, we will hold the Holy Triduum Prayer Service, celebrated nightly at 7:00 PM, Thursday through Saturday. We welcome all to join us in prayer and reflection during this sacred time.

On Sunday, July 20, we culminate the celebration with our beloved procession through the streets of Nonantum with our patron Saint, followed by an emotional Flying Angel ceremony — a cherished blessing of our Saint, the Madonna.

The festival is one of two signature annual events hosted by our non-profit organization that helps fund our annual scholarship drive. To date, we have proudly awarded over $300,000 combined in scholarships to students pursuing higher education & charitable opportunities. Supporting the festival means investing in the future of our community’s youth & friends and families.

We thank you for your continued support and invite you to celebrate this milestone year with us.
